So what’s Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow all about?

Along with Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow launched a new fusion of comedy and kung fu. And it’s easy to see why Snake has been so popular–it’s easily the most engaging of Jackie Chan’s early films. Everyone abuses and humiliates a downtrodden orphan (Chan) until he befriends an old man, who turns out to be the last master of the “snake fist” fighting style. Jackie becomes the old man’s student and finds himself in battle with the master of the “eagle’s claw” style, who has vowed to destroy the snake fist clan. Though these plot elements are familiar stuff, they’re all executed with outstanding verve; the performances, the fight choreography, and even the obligatory training sequence are unusually complex and well filmed. Jackie is in top form and coming into his own as a star. –Bret Fetzer

Personally, I thought Jackie Chan was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Siu Tien Yuen.

First, the movie is about Angela Gheorghiu is the definitive Violetta of her generation, the standard-setter against whom all other exponents of this role must be judged for the foreseeable future. Her affinity for Verdi’s fragile, gentle-hearted courtesan is rooted in a fine balance of acting and singing skills. She looks right, her body language is eloquent without overstatement, and her voice is limpid, expressive, open to a variety of subtle shadings and used gracefully and intelligently. For this, her first Traviata, Covent Garden put together a production in 1994 that is solid and straightforward but otherwise unspectacular–a fairly subdued background against which her performance stands out all the more clearly. Though lacking the vocal splendor and personal magnetism of Placido Domingo, Frank Lopardo gives a sensitive performance as Alfredo, and Sir Georg Solti paces and accents this performance with a thoughtful subtlety that is relatively rare in his work. The result is deeply satisfying. –Joe McLellan.

For more than 20 years, J Men has been only rarely available and mostly on pure quality bootlegged videos. This digitally re-mastered version is authorized by Proctor and Bergman, with special hilarious bonus interviews on the making of the film.

(Jack Black, High Fidelity) hook him up with Judith (Amanda Peet, The Whole Nine Yards)–little suspecting that Judith will tear their friendship apart. Judith wastes no time in taking over Darren’s life, exiling his friends, and burning his beloved Neil Diamond records. If only Wayne and J.D. can bring Darren back together with his high school sweetheart (Amanda Detmer), who’s about to become a nun. Saving Silverman is unquestionably of the There’s Something About Mary school of comedy, throwing together absurd characters and over-the-top gags (for example, a scene of Darren getting butt implants, per Judith’s orders). It doesn’t quite balance everything, but Black and Zahn are engaging comic talents. Also featuring R. Lee Ermey as the boy’s deranged high school football coach, whose advice continues to guide their lives, as well as a surprise appearance by Neil Diamond himself. –Bret Fetzer

First, the movie is about In June 1978, The Cramps played a free concert for patients at the California State Mental Hospital in Napa, California. The Cramps were at the peak of their engaging sound. They had just finished recording “Gravest Hits.” Midway through the second song, a young woman commands the stage and begins sharing the mic with Lux. By the time the “Human Fly” is played a real ho-down is occurring on and off stage with the audience members dancing about, grabbing at the mic and embracing each other - all of which adds to the spectacle of this once-in-a-lifetime performance! Songs include: “Mystery Plane,” “The Way I Walk,” “Human Fly,” “Domino,” “Garbage Man,” and more..

I really enjoyed the performace of Nick Knox and Nick Knox. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Lux Interior, Nick Knox, Bryan Gregory, Poison Ivy Rorschach, The Cramps.
